VARIATIONS IN SEX DEVELOPMENT

Medicine Culture and Psychological Practice

by Lih-Mei Liao

Chaired by Bonnie Scranton and featuring talks by Magda Rakita, Dr Frances Grimstad and the author.

Lih-Mei Liao is psychologist in the UK. In the last twenty years of her career, she was a consultant clinical psychologist and head of department at a leading teaching hospital. One of her clinical roles was to co-develop a multidisciplinary sex development service. In her book, Lih-Mei provides a context for making sense of the dilemmas in the field and suggests theoretical and therapeutic tools for psychosocial professionals to approach their work.

Bonnie Scranton is a Clinical Social Work and Psychotherapist who specializes in relationship counseling and sex therapy. She is also a psychosocial care provider serving people and families impacted by intersex variations. Bonnie is a highly regarded advocate and peer support provider in the field.

Magda Rakita is a life coach who brings ample experience in peer support and in leadership and development of intersex advocacy to the field. In the last 5 years, Magda has successfully co-founded two intersex support groups, one in Poland (interakcja.org.pl) and one in the UK (interconnecteduk.org).

Frances Grimstad is the gynecologist in the Center for Gender Surgery and the Be-U clinic (a program for patients with intersex traits or differences in sexual development) and founder of the Transgender Reproductive Health Service at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her interests center around optimizing reproductive health outcomes for intersex and trans populations including hormonal and menstrual management, sexual health, surgical care, and family planning.

Bonnie, Magda, Frances and Lih-Mei will reflect on their experiences of providing care and support from their respective vantage points and discuss how the book may resonate with their challenges and visions.
